This exquisite Banko-yaki kyusu (teapot) is made in the nasu-gata ( 茄子型 - eggplant shape) from the iconic Banko shidei (紫泥) clay. A high-iron clay that is fired in reduction, shidei known for its muted purple colour and ability to subtly reduce the astringency of tea. The body of this kyusu is decorated with an elegant vertical stripe pattern.
The teapot's built-in ceramic debeso filter is perfect for naturally straining tea. The kyusu ships in its original kiribako (桐箱 - wooden paulownia box), signed and sealed by the artist.
Made by Shimizu Suigetsu (清水醉月), the third-generation kiln head of Suigetsu Ceramics (醉月陶園). Suigetsu Ceramics was founded in 1869 and has been centered around the production of kyusu. Born in 1944, Shimizu Suigetsu-san has received numerous awards and recognition for his work, including formal presentations to the princess and the crown prince, as well as to the Emperor during his ascension to the throne in 1990. Three years later, he succeeded his father as head of the kiln. Today, Shimizu-san continues to innovate in the traditional art of kyusu-crafting, along with his wife and two sons.
Banko-yaki (萬古焼) is a type of Japanese pottery that traditionally comes from Yokkaichi in Mie Prefecture, Japan. Its characteristic purple hue comes from the mixture of red oxidised iron and blue high temperature-baked iron in the clay.
