This ceramic Japanese kogo (incense container) is made in the shape of kami kamashiki (紙釜敷): a folded paper pad on which the kama (釜 - kettle) is rested while the charcoal is place in the brazier during a tea ceremony.

In Japanese tea ceremony, wooden and lacquer kogo are used to hold wood chip incense during the furo (brazier - summer/spring) season while ceramic kogo are used to hold neriko (kneaded incense) during the ro (hearth - autumn/winter) season.
